Announcing Willamette Quarterly Meeting
February 4, 2012
Corvallis Friends Meeting House
3311 NW Polk Street
Corvallis, Oregon
Dear Friends,
The Winter Session of Willamette Quarterly Meeting will be held on the date and place shown above. This session is our traditionally business oriented session during which a number of “housekeeping” and operational issues will be shared, Friends input sought, and decisions made. In addition, one of our members will lead a stimulating exploration based on the following query and comments:
Have Quakers created their own "language barrier"?
Words define; language shapes culture. How does "Quakerish," our sometimes arcane, quaint and in-groupy language, define us — for ourselves, for outside seekers and for
the public at large? Rick Seifert, clerk of Multnomah Monthly Meeting and a writer, will invite participants to explore with him the often murky and confusing nomenclature of Friends. The group will be invited to contribute its own favorite Quaker terms for consideration. The group will ponder the tension between Quaker traditional terms and today's need for Quaker clarity. The perspective of newcomers may be particularly enlightening because they see Quaker terminology through "fresh eyes."Schedule for Saturday, February 4, 2012
