Fall Quarterly Meeting - October 1 and 2, 2010
At the Multnomah Friends Meetinghouse
4312 Stark St, Portland, Oregon“Feeding the Body; Feeding the Soul”
Friends and Food
We will gather to consider the complex interplay of issues related to food production, distribution, consumption, and health with a special focus on social justice and sustainability. What is the relationship of our food decisions to Friends’ testimonies?
How can we as Friends make choices and take actions that reflect our deepest values?
Consider the following words:
“Oregon currently has the second highest hunger rate in the nation, behind only Mississippi.” (USDA, 01/10)
- “Real alleviation of poverty and hunger means allocating the resources of our world into the hands of people who need them most….by creating local food systems.” (Astyk & Newton, “The Rich Get Richer, the Poor Go Hungry” as annotated in the Sept-Oct Utne Reader.
“An astonishing amount of the food we grow—as much as one quarter of the total harvest, according to a 1997 U.S. Department of Agriculture report, never completes the journey from farm gate to dinner table. (Miller & Penn, “Waste Not, Want Not” as annotated in Utne Reader, Sept/Oct, 2010.
“Our relation to food is an exact microcosm of our relationship to life itself….What does hunger have to do with your eating?” (Geneen Roth, Women, Food, and God, 2010)
This gathering is organized around Friday evening October 1st and all day Saturday October 2nd at Multnomah Meeting and in the Friendship Hall of the Unity Church, one block East.
